The United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan (hereinafter collectively referred. to as the “Participants” and individually the “Participant”), recognizing the significant role in intellectual property in improving the competitiveness of enterprises and countries, as well as in promoting economic and social development, wishing to develop further bilateral cooperation in order to strengthen existing intellectual property systems, came to an understanding on the following:

1. Purpose

l.) The purpose of this Memorandum is to develop and strengthen cooperation between the participants on matters relating to intellectual property.

2. Areas of cooperation

2.) The participants plan to cooperate on matters relating to intellectual property in areas of common interest for equal and mutual benefit in accordance with the provisions of this memorandum and the current legislation governing the activities of the participants;

3.) The participants will seek to exchange views within the framework of international and regional treaties;

4.) To increase mutual awareness, the Participants will seek to exchange information on changes in national legislation and current trends in the development of national intellectual property systems, as well as best practices in the protection of intellectual property rights;

5.) In order to raise public awareness and exchange experience on matters relating to intellectual property, the participants will hold roundtables, seminars and other joint events;

6.) The participants may also cooperate in other areas that will be determined in the course of bilateral cooperation based on the current needs of the participants and accepted by both participants.

3. Final provisions

7.) This Memorandum does not provide for financial obligations; the participants will bear their own expenses related to implementation of activities under this memorandum. If an activity is decided upon by both participants and will require the handling of finances, the extent and specifics of the costs will be made explicit and in writing.

8.) This Memorandum comes into effect from the date of its signing by both Participants and will remain in effect for the period of three (3) years.

9.) This Memorandum may only be renewed if jointly decided by the participants by written notice by one participant to the other participant, such notice to be provided (90) calendar days prior to the expiry of the Memorandum.

10.) This Memorandum may be amended by the joint decision of the participants, formalized by an exchange of written communications, specifying the date of its coming into effect.

11.) Either participant may terminate this Memorandum at any time by written notice to the other Participant, such notice to be provided at least (90) calendar days prior to the date of termination.

12.) This Memorandum will be signed in English and Uzbek and both texts being equally authentic.

13.) This Memorandum is not an international agreement and does not create rights and obligations governed by international law.
